A&M-Texarkana PLACE lecture to focus on sports concussions

Dr. Lena Dobson, president and founder of ScandicNeuro Corp., a neuropsychology research and consulting firm based in New York, will be the guest speaker.

“Concussions and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): What We Do Not Know” will be the focus of a Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) lecture at Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in University Center 210 on the A&M-Texarkana campus at 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.

The free event is open to the public.

Dr. Lena Dobson, president and founder of ScandicNeuro Corp., a neuropsychology research and consulting firm based in New York, will be the guest speaker.  CTE has gained widespread media attention in the past decade following its association with the National Football League in research publications authored by neuropathologist Bennet Omalu, M.D. Media coverage of CTE has now spread to involve many other professional sports organizations. The concern also has reached youth sports, as well as the area of military practice, but for some reason science has remained focused on studies involving pro sports.

“This progressive degenerative disease has been reported to impact individuals who have suffered repeated concussions,” said Dr. Dobson in an overview of her presentation, “but is the pathology specific to athletes or could it potentially be an unidentified dementia affecting the general population?”

“I am particularly excited about Dr. Dobson’s visit,” said PLACE Chair Dr. Corrine Hinton, “because my work with veterans and military service members certainly crosses paths with hers as we consider what we know (and do not yet know) about traumatic brain injury and its comorbidity with other disorders and conditions. Anyone interested in concussions and brain injuries – sports and non-sports related – needs to hear what she has to say.”

PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large. PLACE chooses an annual theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion. This year’s theme is “Science and Technology.”
